Bill Tanger and the folks from FORVA and the Upper Roanoke River Roundtable have done what many thought was impossible a few decades ago. Just east of the Memorial Avenue Bridge, an effort to remove an old concrete encased iron sewer pipe “dam” that has been blocking the flow of the Roanoke River through Wasena Park for as long as most people can remember.
BREAKING NEWS: Low-water bridge across Roanoke River at Wasena Park to be replaced
A development that City of Roanoke Engineer Phil Schirmer says will be a “boon to Roanoke’s outdoor-based economy,” the low-water bridge separating Wasena and Smith Parks will be replaced with a new pre-cast concrete bridge with 3 wide and tall openings to permit kayak/canoe passage and allow fish to migrate upstream.
